What exactly is made easier?

Categorisation is crucial because...

Bookkeepers or business owners ‘check and tag’ one bank transaction at a time, out of 1000+ entries to close their books. The tagging step is known as ‘categorisation’. Only with the right categorisation, it can be inferred if a business runs on profit or loss, how much money goes in and out, and from where. Once this step is done, Fincent can generate and share financial reports to the business owners.

Design conditional forms with provision to double-check and create error-free categorisation.

Prototype of rule creation - Categorisation automated at a transaction level

Post release feedback from bookkeepers: hard to identify from long descriptions truncated. Changes implemented with a broader rule modal, and no more truncated descriptions + helper text to find the description asap.

Impact

After the first release, the number of transactions categorised using rules was at a steep 55%. Post feedback from bookkeepers, it rose to an all-time high of 75%, and has also been launched to end-users.

Design Learnings

1. Search and sort functionality for active rules modal was basic; we assumed it was not high priority 2. Truncations weren't useful in cases with longer description. 3. Keyboard shorcut 'w' to create a rule still got missed. This needed a better way to grab their attention

Business Learnings

1. Rules regarding payments were even more detailed, and needed a slightly different treatment given it involved credit card payments and transfers 2. The modal remained the same but we started noting down if payment related transactions were more significant in some clients
